It's not often I get to handle a prized piece such as this excellent history and 160 to 180 years old. This is a great piece of early American shipbuilding history and I hope someone appreciates it as much as I do. Tools such as this, made in early New York City, were for the early shipwrights and builders along the water, a huge business in the day. The handle is 31" long with the usual adze curve present. The adze is in excellent condition with just a few impact marks on the underside of the head near the makers mark as can be seen in the images. This is a very nice adze ready for use or display. This fit requires a thin leather shim between the wedge and the handle for an exact tight fit. When installed, the edge of the eye wall fits well into the notch in the handle and the wedge holds everything in place. This makes for a three part fit, the handle, the head, and the wedge. I believe the handle is original as it has a distinct notch in the end which fits side of the eye. The edge could use a hone if put to use though with the history of this adze, I assume it will become part of a collection. The handle has a small hand forged wedge in the back where it joins the eye, it fits perfectly in the eye and appears original to the adze. The poll is straight with no bends or repairs. I've seen both types and according to my research, the lipped version is favored by many in the trade. The cutting edge measures 5" from lip to lip on the outside and 10" from edge to the poll end. This adze also has the lipped sides which some say reduces deep nicks and gouging during the smoothing process. The makers mark is somewhat light but you can make out most of Horton and some of New York I have attempted to show this in image #3 above. This adze has a 3" octagon poll for setting oakum and other specific tasks necessary for boat builders and shipwrights.
